Life is not about what is "fair."  Life is what you make it, PERIOD.

It is very hard to live the ideal life, balancing selfish pleasure with "goodness."  Even Ghandi was an asshole at times.

"Being Your Best Self - Even When Times Are Tough"
It helps you maintain a positive outlook on life.

"When you are a person of honor and integrity, it keeps you on a purposeful and enriching path. It also helps you maintain a positive outlook on life and generally makes you a happier person. This is because when you stand firm in your beliefs and behaviors, the feedback you get from others validates you and your actions."

More.

"When you walk your talk and do the right things, it makes your world a better place, both for you and for those you care about. It’s not about wanting other people to think and act the way you do; it’s about being tolerant and keeping a proper perspective. The idea here is to be your best self without compromising your values. You’ll feel better for it, as will others around you."

As I examine my life at age 71, I am definitely not the best person I could imagine, not the super hero, perfect person I imagined.

BUT I can imagine the best person I want to be and keep trying to do better, always better!

We cannot avoid being everything our life experiences have made us to be.  What we can do, however, is identify-understand-adapt-improvise-overcome the worst self we have become and not let that worst self have its day.

"12 Ways to stop being so hard on yourself"

By Larry KimCEO of MobileMonkey, Inc.@larrykim

"Her 12 powerful tips:

  - Your mistakes are part of your learning. Learn to be resilient in the face of failure.
  - Don't compare yourself to others because you aren't them. You're you, so accept yourself for who you are, faults and all.
  - There is no right way to do anything. Don't limit your thinking to a right or wrong way--there's no right way to do the wrong thing, and no wrong way to do something right!
  - Stand up for what you believe, even if it's unpopular. Make everyone understand your big, crazy ideas.
  - Learn from people who criticize you. Don't let criticism get you down; let it inspire you to work you ass off!
  - Accept your weaknesses as your "features". You aren't good at everything you do, but nobody else is, either!
  - Look at your past as an adventurous biography. Your past isn't your identity and doesn't dictate your entrepreneurial destiny.
  - Don't underestimate your talent until you apply it 100 times. Are you applying your natural talents?
  - Every single problem you have is not unique. Put your problems in perspective and solve them faster.
  - Intelligence is relative, self-esteem is not. Stay positive, take care of yourself, forget about being perfect, and always keep improving yourself.
  - Express your anger in a creative way. Feel you anger, express it, and learn from it.
  - Surround yourself with people who want you to succeed. Having people you can trust and rely on will make you happier and feel better about yourself."

Self-help is always a great idea.

I am sorry for hurting people in the life I lived so far . . . I reflect often, but cannot change any of the past deeds I regret.  There is no going back to fix things so my only course is to be my best self from today.

Jar of Hearts is a theme song of a sort.  I identify with the idea of "who do you think you are."

"Jar of Hearts

Christina Perri

I know I can't take one more step towards you
'Cause all that's waiting is regret
Don't you know I'm not your ghost anymore
You lost the love I loved the most

I learned to live, half alive
And now you want me one more time

Who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don't come back for me
Who do you think you are?

I hear you're asking all around
If I am anywhere to be found
But I have grown too strong
To ever fall back in your arms

I've learned to live, half alive
And now you want me one more time

Who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the…

Who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
So don't come back for me
Who do you think you are?

It took so long just to feel alright
Remember how to put back the light in my eyes
I wish I had missed the first time that we kissed
'Cause you broke all your promises
And now you're back
You don't get to get me back

Who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
And tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
Don't come back for me
Don't come back at all

Who do you think you are?
Runnin' 'round leaving scars
Collecting your jar of hearts
Tearing love apart
You're gonna catch a cold
From the ice inside your soul
Don't come back for me
Don't come back at all

Who do you think you are?
Who do you think you are?
Who do you think you are?"
