I took graduate courses in sociology in San Antonio, Texas when I was in the Air Force.  I went to Trinity University.  One professor, David Davies, a young man at the time, but old enough that he has probably passed [I Googled for 15 minutes and found nothing about him!], told the class that a lot of good was done FOR SELFISH REASONS.  In fact, I think he said all good is done for selfish reasons, even if only to aggrandize ourselves in our own eyes.
